The Met predicts normal monsoon (aveholidayhome.com)

The Met predicts normal monsoon
The weather gods may yet again be in a benign mood this year, if the forecast for the southwest monsoon rainfall — June to September 2012 — fructifies.
According to the India Meteorological Department, the precipitation during the ensuing season is likely to be 99% of the long period average of 890 mm, with an error margin of +/-5%.If all goes well, we are heading for a good agricultural season for the third year in a row.
In quantitative terms, the precipitationduring these four months works out to nearly 880 mm; this compares favourably with the 2011 season’s890 mm.A deviation of 5% on either side is nothing to worry about as it will still imply a copious monsoon.
However, the forecast warns that there is a probability of 24% of the rainfall falling in the below normal range of 90 -96% of the long-period average (LPA) but the probability of it being in excess of normal (above 110%) or deficient (below 90%) is low at less than 10%.
Reassuring though this optimistic assessment of the ensuing southwest monsoon is, two caveats are in order. One, the forecast now issued and the second one to be releasedin June, do not saymuch about the distribution of rainfall.
More than the quantum, it is the spreadthat matters from the point of agricultural production. In the 2011 season, the total rain during the four months ended September, at 101% of the LPA, was less than the 102% of the LPA in 2010. Yet, foodgrain production had surged by 8 million tonne to a record 252.56 million tonne in 2011-12.
Rice, wheat and cotton are likely to scale new peaks. This is attributable to opportune and abundant showers in June 2011 (112% of the LPA for the month), in August (110%) and in September (106%). These spells offset the 15% deficit in the July rainfall. Region-wise, barring the north-east, all the rest had normal rains during the June- September 2011 period.
Two, the IMD’s forecasts are prone to go wrong, given the complex nature of the exercise and the continental dimensions of our country. In 2011, for example, the Met was proved to be more often wrong than right - seven out of ten forecasts were falsified by the actual turn of events. In fact, in its end-of-the season report on south west monsoon 2011, it had admitted to have erred in this respect.
“Most of the operational long range forecasts issued for the southwest monsoon rainfall were under-estimating the actual rainfall and, therefore, were not very accurate.”
But, the more important point to note is that, Indian agriculture has acquired a resilience to better cope with the vagaries of the monsoon. This was demonstrated by the fact, during 2009, the rainfall recorded during the southwest monsoon period had dipped to the lowest ever in the post-Independent period to 698.2 mm, or 22% below the long period average. Yet, our foodgrain production was sustained at a relatively high level of 218 million tonne, thanks to more area under irrigation and improved farm practices.
Reassuring still is the fact, that rabi season is now accounting for an increasingly large share of foodgrainoutput as it is the kharif crop, sown with the onset of the monsoon, is liable to be more vulnerable if weather gods play truant.Of course, problem areas exist such as coarse grains, pulses and oilseeds, but overall, farm sector has obtained a measure of immunity from weather aberrations.
In this sense, the forecast of an average monsoon in the agricultural year that is ahead, is heartening. But, even with a sub-normal season characterised by less than adequate rains, the farm outlook can be good if the precipitation turns out to be good over time and space.
The IMD forecast is indicative, not definitive and should be viewed as an attempt to unravel one of the monsoon which can still make or mar our farm fortunes.

What is Tour(about Tour)

A tour operator typically combines tour and travel components to create a holiday. They prepare itenarary. The most common example of a tour operator's product would be a flight on a charter airline plus a transfer from the airport to a hotel and the services of a local representative, all for one price. Niche tour operators may specialise in destinations, e.g. Italy, activities and experiences, e.g. skiing, or a combination thereof. The original raison d'etre of tour operating was the difficulty of making arrangements in far-flung places, with problems of language, currency and communication. The advent of the internet has led to a rapid increase in self-packaging of holidays. However, tour operators still have their competence in arranging tours for those who do not have time to do DIY holidays, and specialize in large group events and meetings such as conferences or seminars. Also, tour operators still exercise contracting power with suppliers (airlines, hotels, other land arrangements, cruises, etc.) and influence over other entities (tourism boards and other government authorities) in order to create packages and special departures for destinations otherwise difficult and expensive to visit.

TOPICS ABOUT GOOGLE DOODLE

Doodles are the fun, surprising and sometimes spontaneous changes that are made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries and the lives of famous artists, pioneers and scientists.
How did the ideafor doodles originate?
In 1998, before the company was even incorporated, the concept of the doodle was born when Google founders Larry and Sergey played with the corporate logo to indicate their attendance at the Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert. They placed a stick figure drawing behind the 2nd "o" in the word Google, and the revised logo was intended as a comical message to Google users that the founders were "out of office". While the first doodle was relatively simple, the idea of decorating the company logo to celebrate notable events was born.
Two years later, in 2000, Larry and Sergey asked current webmaster Dennis Hwang, an intern at the time, to produce a doodle for Bastille Day. It was so well received by our users that Dennis was appointed Google's chief doodler, and doodles started showing up more and more regularly on the Google homepage. In the beginning, the doodles mostly celebrated familiar holidays; nowadays, they highlight a wide array of events and anniversaries from the Birthday of John James Audubon to the Ice Cream Sundae.
Over time, the demand for doodles has risen in the US and internationally. Creating doodles is now the responsibility of a team of talented illlustrators (we call them doodlers) and engineers. For them, creating doodles has become a group effort to enliven the Google homepage and bring smiles to the faces of Google users around the world.
Make a Doodle Your Permanent Google Icon
Google's clever, mysterious, and completely random logo changes, known as "doodles," usually last for just one day. With this Greasemonkey script, you can make any official Google doodle the logo you always see next to your search results.
The "Favorite Doodle" user script, coded by a Google employee and working only with Greasemonkey on Firefox, links the Google logo on the main and search results pages to Google's gallery of doodles. Under each doodle, the script inserts a "Make This My Favorite Doodle!" button, and clicking it does so. By default, the script will allow new holiday/event doodles to appear, but you can overwrite that behavior by accessing Favorite Doodle's user script commands from the Greasemonkey menu.

Today Google Toodle (Image of Google)

Gideon Sundback invented the zip, a product that has been holding together much of the parts of our lives for about a century now. And Google has paid a tribute to the man with a an unzippable doodle on this 132nd birthday.
Google Gideon Sundback's 132nd birthday doodle gives the appearance of a jacket front that has the Google logo embroidered on it and a zip runs through the middle of the Google logo, separating the second 'o'. To get to know what the doodle is all about users can either click on the logo or better, unzip to reveal what lies within.
We all use zips, but few may have pondered about how they actually work. Sundback's design, that he finalised in 1913, had a zipper with interlocking oval scoops (earlier designs made use of hooks) that could be easily interlocked by moving a slider. The patent application for the new invention was filed in 1914 and issued in 1917.

Excerpts from Gideon Sundback's patent for the 'separable fastener' detailing how his invention actually works:
This invention relates to separable fasteners, and has particular reference to that type of fastener for garments and other purposes, where two flexible stringers are locked and unlocked by a sliding cam device mounted on both members, the locking being effected by an movement in one direction and unlocking by an opposite movement.
The objects of the present invention are to decrease the weight and bulk, to increase the flexibility and security of locking, and to provide one form of locking member for both stringers, so constructed and arranged that when properly positioned relatively to each other on the stringers they lock and unlock upon proper movement of the cam sliding device.
A further object of the invention is to simplify the cam sliding device, which is possible owing to the reduction of locking members to one form for both stringers, instead of the different forms heretofore employed on the respective stringers.
According to the present invention, the stringers are alike, as in some prior types of this fastener, preferably consisting as herein shown of a fabric tape provided with a beaded or corded edge, upon which the locking members, are clamped.
The locking members are all alike, and therefore interchangeable, and in general form consist of contractible jaw portions which are clamped upon the tape and projecting locking portions of elongated cup shape, so that the outside of one member nests within the recess of an adjoining member when in locked relation.

Palolem Beach (aveholidayhome.com)

Articles About GOA BEACH

Winter has well and truly set in and with it come the grey skies, the rain and an overwhelming desire to get away from it all. Why not trade your anorak for a bikini and set off for more tropical shores?

India may not be the first place you think of when dreaming of sun, sea and sand but it is home to one of South-East Asia’s most unique holiday spots; the gem that is Goa.

Goa’s unique history and culture, combined with its tropical climate and picturesque beaches make it the ideal place to escape to during the winter. The best time to visit is from October to April, when the sun shines in all its splendour upon the shores of this the coast of Malabar, before the monsoon rains set in in May or June. So pack your sunscreen and flip-flops and get yourself to Goa this winter!
Brief History

Goa is India’s smallest state, and one of its most unique. It is the only state that was never fully occupied by the British Raj and was instead a Portuguese colony for over 450 years. Its location on the coast made it a useful strategic colony for the Portuguese and the Portuguese influence is still very much apparent in all aspects of the Goan lifestyle. The colonial architecture, the local language, the food, and the religion of the Goans were all shaped by the Portuguese occupation. Names like Fernandez or Mourinho are very common among resident Goans, and there is a very strong Catholic presence that has resulted in huge churches, monuments and convent schools. The local language, Konkani, is similar to Portuguese and is perhaps the most melodic of Indian dialects.

Where to go

Direct charter flights from the UK, Germany and Scandinavia are increasing every year, and with it the influx of tourists. Most of the passengers on these flights head straight to north Goa, where they can stay in luxury all-inclusive resorts, only straying from the comfort of their hotel for the odd bit of shopping. But there is another side to Goa, one that will appeal to the more independent traveler searching for a less busy and indeed more authentic experience. To find it, head south to the more secluded area of Canacona, and stay on what is perhaps India’s most picturesque of beaches, Palolem.

Palolem

Palolem beach stretches between two magnificent headlands and the beach is lined with towering coconut palms. Every season bamboo-hut resorts and restaurants are erected along the beach allowing tourists to stay right on the sand, only a few meters away from a swim in the Arabian Sea. The beach huts range from very basic to somewhat luxurious, with en suite huts becoming more common every year. Palolem provides beautiful accommodation for all types of traveler with prices varying throughout the season; Christmas and New Year being the peak. Backpackers should have no problem finding somewhere to stay by just turning up and looking around, but if you are looking for something more exclusive it may be better to try and book in advance especially during December and January. Palolem is also ideal for young families as the atmosphere is relaxed, friendly and safe. Restaurants in Palolem are varied and due to the amount of tourists, generally of a very high standard. You can get anything from local Indian delights to authentic Italian pizza and pasta, and an added bonus is that alcohol is completely legal and very accessible. (Alcohol is illegal in some Indian states). The locally produced Kingfisher beer is a favorite amongst all visitors.

Things to do

You may find that all you want to do is lay back in a hammock under the palm trees but there is a lot more on offer. The local fishermen offer ‘dolphin trips’ in their boats. They can usually take as many as five people out and although seeing dolphins is not guaranteed, the boat trip in itself is a great experience. There are several little bays to see and a lot of wildlife around the surrounding cliffs. Dolphins do frequent the area, and sometimes they are even spotted swimming in the bay right near the beach! If you are feeling more adventurous, hire a motorbike or moped and do some exploring. The roads are slow and as long as you are careful you should have a fun day driving through the local villages and along some of the beautiful roads. Alternatively catch a bus or rickshaw into the local town of Chawdi, which is taken over every Saturday by an interesting market. The neighbouring beach of Agonda, even more secluded than Palolem can also be easily reached by rickshaw or by fishing boat. Don’t forget to indulge in some fresh fruit while you are there, pineapples, mangoes, papayas and coconuts are all in plentiful supply. The friendly beach fruit sellers will be happy to peel and slice a whole pineapple for you. Delicious! Sunsets at Palolem are incredible so take the time to sit and watch the spectacle of colours. For those who wish to seek it, there is also a mild nightlife which centers around two or three bars with late licenses along the beach.

Palolem is also quite a good base from which to visit other areas of Goa. Arrange for a taxi in advance and spend a day in Anjuna, where there is a weekly market that will dazzle even the most enthusiastic of shoppers. Clothes, material, jewelery, gems, and all kinds of Indian delights are available at bargain prices. Haggling is a must! For a more cultural experience head for the Goan capital, Panaji and from there, to Old Goa to experience a truly colonial atmosphere.

Read about the health benefits of papaya. Papaya is excellent for the human body. Find out how eating papaya can help you and keep you healthy and strong. (aveholidayhome.com)

Papaya - A Powerhouse of Nutrients!

The health benefits of fruits and vegetables cannot be equated to that promised by nutritional pills and supplements. Nutrition experts advocate generous intake of fruits for optimum health as these food items are loaded with all the benefits. Fruits are goldmine of vitamins, minerals and fiber and are ideal to consume at least 4-5 servings in a day. Since they are in the natural form, account for largest part of water and 100% bad cholesterol free, it’s much easier for the body to process and absorb the vitamins and minerals from the fresh fruit.

Yellow and orange fruits and vegetables contain varying amounts of antioxidants such as vitamin C as well as carotenoids and bioflavonoids, two classes of phytochemicals that scientists are studying extensively for their health-promoting potential. In addition, a new scientific base is emerging to support a protective role for this group of fruits and vegetables in prevention of cataract formation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diverticulosis, and possibly, hypertension.

“Papaya” is recommended to be one such pick from the group of Yellow and orange fruits, which promises abundant health benefits. It is a melon like fruit with yellow- orange flesh with dozens of small black seeds enclosed in skin that ranges in color from green to orange. Papaya has high nutritional benefits. It is rich in Anti-oxidants, the B vitamins, folate and pantothenic acid; and the minerals, potassium and magnesium; and fiber. Together, “these nutrients promote the health of the cardiovascular system and also provide protection against colon cancer.” In addition, papaya contains the digestive enzyme, papain, which is used like bromelain, a similar enzyme found in pineapple, to treat sports injuries, other causes of trauma, and allergies. Vitamin C and vitamin A, which is made in the body from the beta-carotene in papaya, are both needed for the proper function of a healthy immune system. Papaya may therefore be a healthy fruit choice for preventing such illnesses as recurrent ear infections, colds and flu.

Gluten refers to a group of proteins that are difficult for humans to digest. One group of proteins called gliadin is thought to do most of the damage to the intestinal lining. Glutenins are another group of proteins found in gluten and thought to be associated with autoimmune skin diseases and asthma. Gluten proteins are extremely resistant to intestinal digestion, despite grinding, cooking, processing and digestion.

Almonds can also help you lose weight. Because they contain fiber, protein, and the good type of fat, they help keep you full, making them an ideal healthy snack. (aveholidayhome.com)

Benefits of eating almonds

Learn about the almond's health benefits
My mom always says that the key to health is eating a handful of almonds a day. I have always been skeptical, but as it turns out, she may be right. From weight loss to heart protection, these small, unassuming nuts can help you maintain your health and ward off disease.

Nutrients in almonds

Almonds are one of the most nutritious nuts around. They are dense in vitamins and minerals that help keep your body healthy. In addition to providing a hefty dose of protein and fiber, almonds also contain the essential fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6. They also contain vitamin E, zinc, calcium, iron, phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium. While almonds do have fat in them, but it is monosaturated fat, which is the type that is great for your heart.

Health benefits

The health benefits of eating almonds include the consumption of a certain form of vitamin E that is a very important antioxidant. This means it helps neutralize free radicals, which if unchecked, can result in disease and illness. The Almond Board of California says that most Americans do not get nearly enough vitamin E in their diet, and touts that “just one ounce of almonds (about 23) contains 35% of the Daily Value for vitamin E.”

Almonds can also help you lose weight. Because they contain fiber, protein, and the good type of fat, they help keep you full, making them an ideal healthy snack. They are perfect for stashing in your desk at work! If you fill up on almonds, you won’t need to grab those potato chips or cookies.

Most importantly, almonds are very beneficial for heart health. They contain low levels of saturated fat and have no cholesterol. Eating them will not only help you avoid food that is unhealthy, but almonds themselves can actually help you maintain lower cholesterol levels, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Low cholesterol levels make you less likely to develop heart disease, which according to the Almond Board of California is the leading cause of men and women in the United States.

Almonds are low on the gylcemic index, which means they do not cause a large increase in blood glucose levels. It has been found that almonds help decrease rises in blood sugar after meals. When eaten with high-glycemic foods, eating almonds lowers the glycemic index of the entire meal. This can help prevent the development of diabetes.

The state of Tamil Nadu has a distinct place in culinary map of the country. Many famous Tamil cuisines are enjoyed by one and all and are now a part of the national cuisine. (aveholidayhome.com)

Tamil Nadu Food Recipes - The Ingredients

Tamil Nadu food menu has a wide range of vegetarian and non-vegetarian delicacies to offer. The food here gets its flavor from a host of spices and condiments used in Tamil Nadu. Coconut, tamarind and asafoetida are a must for almost all vegetarian recipes. Garam masala is avoided in Tamil cuisine. In Tamil Nadu Coconut oil is normally used as the medium of cooking. Chutneys and mixed spice are served in the lunch and enhance the taste of the Tamil Nadu food.
In Tamil Nadu, a typical meal consists of rice lentils, grains and vegetables. Chettinad cuisine of Tamil Nadu is particularly famous all over the country. This cuisine is hot and spicy and provides delectable variety in mutton, chicken and fish dishes. Chettinad Pepper Chicken is one of the most famous Tamil Nadu dishes. The Tamil style of Mughali food can be tasted in the Biriyanis and Paya. Paya is a type of spiced trotter’s broth and is eaten with either Parathas or Appam.

Tamil Nadu, especially Chennai, is famous for its filter coffee. Most Tamils have a subtle disliking for instant coffee; therefore filter coffee is more popular. The preparation of filter coffee is almost like a daily chore, the coffee beans have to be first roasted and then ground. The coffee powder is then put into a filter set and hot boiled water is added to prepare the boiling and allowed to set for about 15 minutes. The decoction is then added to milk with sugar to taste. The drink thus prepared is then poured from one container to another in rapid succession to make the perfect frothy cup of filter coffee. An exotic drink that refreshes you and the taste that lingers.

Delectable Tamil Cuisines

In Tamil Nadu cuisine, breakfast or tiffin includes idly, dosai (a pancake made from a batter of rice) and lentils crisp fried on a pan, vada(deep fried doughnuts made from a batter of lentils), pongal, uppuma. Most of the dishes in Tamil Nadu are eaten with coconut chutney, sambar.
The Tamil Lunch or meals consists of cooked rice served with different kinds of vegetable dishes, Sambar, chutneys, Rasam (a hot broth made with tamarind juice and pepper) and curd(yogurt). The non-vegetarian lunch includes curries or dishes cooked with mutton, chicken or fish. Tamil meals are incomplete without crisp Papads or Appalam.

Apples are obtained from the medium sized tree belonging to the rosaceous family. The apple tree is cultivated mountain ranges of Kazakhstan, and now many parts of the world. (aveholidayhome.com)

10 Health Benefits of Apples

Many of us forget that sometimes, the simplest answers are the best. Better health could be as easy as reaching for the fruit bowl for some apples next time you need a snack

Bone Protection

French researchers found that a flavanoid called phloridzin that is found only in apples may protect post-menopausal women from osteoporosis and may also increase bone density. Boron, another ingredient in apples, also strengthens bones.
