Beaches in TamilNadu

Covelong Beach

Covelong or Kovalam beach is a perfect beach holiday destination in Tamil Nadu. It is a fishing village 40km south of Chennai on the way to Mahabalipuram. The drive through the east coast road to this calm and serene beach is a memorable one. This beach is famous for its fishing activities. It is one of the best beaches in the coromandal coast. History reveals that Covelong was a port town built by the Nawaab of Carnatic named Saadat Ali. This beautiful port town was took over by French and then demolished by the British. During the colonial days, the Dutch built a wondrous fort in this beach. Now this fort is taken over by Taj group and it is renovated as Taj Fisherman’s Cove, a luxury beach resort. The mild waves and surf gives us an opportunity for water sports activities including wind surfing, swimming and boat rides. An ancient catholic church reminds us about the past years of colonial architecture. The swaying groves, pristine shore and the clear blue sea make this beach a perfect getaway from urban life.
Mahabalipuram Beach

Mahabalipuram Beach situated in the Silk City of Tamil Nadu-Kancheepuram, Mahabalipuram is a world heritage site. Also known as Mamallapuram, this was a port city during the 7th century under the dynasty of Pallavas. Mahabalipuram beach is adorned by clean shining sand, rocky shore and historic sculptures. This beach is a silent beach away from the fussy crowd which owes a holy ambience. Moreover, the remains of the history gives us a special feel which relaxes your soul. This destination is famous for the historic monuments, panels, sculptures, monolithic rathas (chariots), temples and caves. The rock cut architecture and monolithic sculptures mesmerize you. Most of them are the finest examples of Dravidian and Pallava art but Buddhist style can also be seen here. The Shore Temple is a major landmark in the lovely beach along the Bay of Bengal with the entrance from the western side away from the sea. Another major attraction is the Pancha Rathas named after the Pancha Pandavas from Mahabharatha, each pyramidal structure carved out from a large single piece of stone. Arjuna’s penance which is a relief sculpture, Varaha cave- a temple carved out from a rock and Krishna mandapa having a bas relief of Krishna carrying the Govardhan hill in his fingertip are must see places here. Moreover the hand loom silk available here called Kancheepuram silk is popular world wide as it is woven from the finest silk and is very expensive. These silk sarees are a personal pride of women all over the country. Mahabalipuram beach is well connected by road, rail and air. It is 60 km south of Chennai city. Buses ply to this site from Chennai, Pondicherry and Chengalpattu.
